What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is an inflammation and infection of the gum tissue caused by bacteria that accumulates as plaque on your teeth. It generally starts when plaque is not effectively removed, leading to the gums becoming infected.

If left untreated, gum disease can cause irreversible damage to the bone and connective tissue that holds your teeth in place. This, in turn, can result in tooth loss. With that in mind, gum disease can be categorized into two stages: gingivitis and periodontitis.

Gingivitis – The Early Stage

Gingivitis is the initial stage of gum disease, during which the gums become red, inflamed, and bleed easily. This is generally caused by inadequate oral hygiene practices that allow plaque to accumulate on teeth. While gingivitis is reversible and can be treated by simple professional cleaning and improved dental hygiene habits, if left untreated, it can progress into the more severe form of gum disease, known as periodontitis.

Periodontitis – The Advanced Stage

Periodontitis is the advanced stage of gum disease where the gums and bone that support your teeth become severely damaged. In this stage, periodontal pockets (spaces between the teeth and gums) begin to form, allowing dental plaque and bacteria to invade below the gum line. Ultimately, this can lead to tooth loss and other health complications.
